Verification

This document describes image verification for Embedded Linux newbies, so, if you are new or think that some Linux and Yocto concepts passed you by - feel free to proceed with reading this guide, you will find essentials here!

Every Linux image should provide a list of basic functionalities, including, apart from booting, a list of basic packages (in case of Zarhus it is defined by Yocto Project) and a list of working basic interfaces.

Note

Though the following chapters present "basic interfaces" which Zarhus OS provides support for, some of the interfaces may not be available for your target, if so, check your target page.

Prerequisites

There is no image verification without an image, right? So, proceed with building and flashing steps firstly.

Hardware prerequisites:

  • Power supply for your target, refer to your target page for more information;
  • Serial communication devices, refer to your target page and check how to establish serial communication with your target;
  • A cable for Ethernet connection with your target.

Verification

The verification is an execution of a set of basic commands on the running system to prove the functionality of Zarhus OS.

Booting platform

This is the basic functionality of all OSes. To verify this, you need to connect to the serial port of your target and start communication with your host device, check your target page on how to do so.

Plug in target power supply after the connection has been established and check for following logs:

Above logs are for Zarhus OS port for a Radxa board, but you should see similar logs, because these are considered to be the common Linux boot logs.

Basic packages

There is a list with basic packages included into all Zarhus OS images for all platforms. Below are some examples how to verify version of these utilities after you have booted into Zarhus OS:

Basic operation of common interfaces

USB

Type lsblk command before and after plugging SSD/USB disk via USB port. You should see a new device (sda in this case) appears in the system:

If it can be mounted (the partition on the device should have file system so to be able to be mounted), that means that the USB interface works properly:

Ethernet

After connecting the Ethernet cable to the RJ-45 port on a target platform, you should automatically gain access to the network, meaning that the device should get an IP address. Depending on your target platform, the IP address will vary because of the DHCP gateway.

Here is a way you can check your device IP address on Zarhus OS:

In above logs field inet is followed by the device IPv4 address which, in this case, is 192.168.0.66.

If internet connection is available in your infrastructure, the device should be able to reach the external addresses, e.g.:
